Tips to Prevent Tooth Decay

Tooth decay affects over one fourth of all the children present in the US aged 2-5 years, one eighth aged 12-14 an
d over
90% of adults aged 40 and above. This high number is because of the lack of awareness that is present among patients on how to prevent tooth decay. When the harmful bacteria is not cleaned regularly, they accumulate at the base of the teeth and harden, forming plaque, which if not cleaned turns into tartar, which is a major contributor to tooth decay. Listed below are a few tips you should start practicing to prevent tooth decay and unwanted trips to the dentist:

Oral hygieneprevent tooth decay

It is important to take care of your teeth. Some of the most important tips include:

  • Visit the dentist, twice a year. Preventive dentistry is very important to be able to live a healthy life.
  • Floss everyday. Since your toothbrush cannot reach all the areas, and may not help remove food particles, flossing becomes a necessity.
  • Use a good toothpaste. You can also ask your dentist to recommend you a toothpaste as the right one depends on several things, including the condition of your teeth.
  • Brush regularly, twice a day. Also, make sure to brush in a proper manner. You should not apply too much pressure and also move your tooth pressure slowly so that it cleans properly.

Avoid Colored Drinks

Colored drinks include hot and cold drinks alike. Tea, coffee along with soft drinks can cause severe damage to your teeth if taken in excess. Firstly, they increase the acidity of the mouth, which causes the white covering of your tooth(enamel) to slowly weaken and erode. The weaker the enamel, the higher the risk of it decaying and eroding which can lead to cavities and sensitivity.

In addition to this, the chemicals present in these drinks also result in tooth discoloration. However, it does not mean you have to bid adieu to your favorite drink. But it is important to reduce the amount you consume.

Eat Healthy Meals in a Healthy Manner

Stay away from eating unhealthy meals, especially snacks. Foods like chocolates and candies can cause major damage to the health of your teeth. Plus, it is also important to make sure you bite properly. Putting too much pressure or trying to chew objects that are too hard (ice etc.) can lead to tooth decay.

We are hopeful these tips will help you keep your teeth health. In addition to this, you can also go for dental sealants. Recent surveys have shown that teeth protected by dental sealants are 99% more protected from cavities than those teeth which are exposed and uncovered.
